Urban bee accommodation

Urban space is being dictated by the design of urban beehives and bee stands.

URBAN BEEHIVE

Bees in Ljubljana flying to forage in a radius of up to three kilometres have numerous parks, avenues and other urban green spaces, while distances to larger green areas are also within their reach. Urban beekeeping has been growing quickly in recent years. In the city, there is ever greater awareness of the importance of pollination and honey production, which has an impact on numerous decisions and projects such as the selection of nectar-bearing trees and ornamental plants in new landscaping. Urban space is being dictated by the design of urban beehives and bee stands.

PLEČNIK – URBAN BEEKEEPER

In the garden of Plečnik’s house in Trnovo there is still a beehive which Plečnik himself set up in his garden. He did none of the beekeeping, as this was done by his nephew, but he did develop a type of simple urban beehive which was well-suited to an artisanal garden and simultaneously designed so that it offered good options to both the beekeeper and the bees.

NEW BEE RESIDENCES

With the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Ljubljana, the City of Ljubljana has designed urban forms of bee stands and beehives. As part of the Dešman Seminar with Prof Dešman, students created five proposals for bee stands and three for beehives. As a framework for consideration, they took Plečnik’s beehive and approached the task with youthful imagination and verve and proposed fresh and innovative solutions. The work was done with the advice of expert apiculturists.

BEES IN TIVOLI

The first proposal for urban bee stands was implemented above the lake in Tivoli Park in 2016. On land belonging to the City of Ljubljana, the idea was implemented by beekeeper Damir Škraban. The City of Ljubljana has prepared recommendations for beekeeping within the motorway ring. The recommendations specify the number of frames that can be placed in a single location to the kind of education that a beekeeper must have.

The urban beehive is a house in which the frames are set, but it is also an urban information point which relates the traditional and modern culture of beekeeping. The bees and frames are protected against bad weather, a constant temperature is maintained and good ventilation is assured. It must facilitate the bees’ take-off and landing and protect them from pests and vandalism. It should also enable the beekeeper to clean the tools and equipment he needs in his work.

DID YOU KNOW?

Two types of beehive predominate in Slovenia – Alberti-Žnidaršič (AŽ) hives and more costly Langstroth-Root (LR) hives. The former are arranged in an apiary, while the second can stand on stands in the countryside. Students proposed solutions for the siting of both types of beehives.

Early in the

19th

century beekeepers started large-scale trading not just in honey and wax but also in bees.

Until

1901

on Medarska ulica or Honey Street in Ljubljana retail sales of honey took place.

As early as the

10th

century BCE in the town of Tell Rehov above the River Jordan is said to be the start of urban beekeeping.

Since

2016

we and our partners have organised Honey Week.

As many as

3

cultural institutions in Ljubljana

have hives on their roofs. Bees buzz at Cankarjev dom, the Spanish Fighters Cultural Centre and Šiška Cinema Centre for Urban Culture.

On the

13th

floor

is the highest beehive in Ljubljana. In partnership with the Urban Beekeeper Society and beekeeper Gorazd Trušnovec, the Hotel Park Ljubljana has put two hives on its roof which produced 25kg of honey in 2016.

As many as

3

per cent

of Slovenia’s beekeepers are in Ljubljana. They are linked in five beekeeping societies, which look after their professional knowledge.
