Ecological zone

More space and safety for pedestrians and cyclists.

HEART OF THE CITY

Ljubljana is following the course set by the Sustainable Mobility Plan that meets the requirements of modern times in terms of mobility and sustainable development.  Priority is given to pedestrians, cyclists and public transport. Closing the city centre to motorised vehicles is just one of the measures which have resulted in a complete transformation of the city’s image in such a short time, as well as making the city friendlier and more accessible to its citizens and visitors.

CAR FREE ZONE

More space for pedestrians and cyclists, fewer emissions and less noise were brought about in 2007 when the old city centre was closed to all motorised traffic. Deliveries can be made with a permit between 6am and 10am. The space that was once overcrowded with cars has become an ever more popular setting for a variety of social, cultural and sports events and a meeting point for social life in the city.

JUST NEXT TO THE PARK

With further refurbishment of public space now planned, the city centre will be connected to Tivoli, Ljubljana’s oldest park. A path will be created from Tivoli over the green Castle Hill to the forested hillside of Golovec Hill.

RENOVATION OF SLOVENSKA STREET

One of the most visible measures aimed at establishing a good-quality public area in the city centre is the transformation of part of the main traffic artery of ‘Slovenska Street’ into a more attractive area for pedestrians, cyclists and users of city buses.
