GREEN YOURSELF

Small steps - big results.

Most people do not consume the recommended daily amount of water, which for the general inactive population in a normal environment is 2.5 litres.

Water is our and your responsibility

I pledge that, wherever possible, I will drink tap water. When I go out, I will fill a bottle to take with me. Please mark every photo on this topic that you post on social networks #ljforyou #greencapital2016 or #voda.

Fill a bottle with water

It’s better to drink water from the tap or Ljubljana’s drinking fountains, as BPA plastic bottles that we buy in the shops are harmful to the environment and our health. More than half of plastic is not recycled and most ends up in the sea. Natural decomposition of plastic takes up to 700 years. And as we’ve had many drinking fountains in Ljubljana since 2008, residents and visitors can fill a bottle from them

The City’s allotments have all the infrastructure needed – water, WCs, recycling, parking, sheds and store boxes.

Grow your own at home

I pledge that I will do my garden/home balcony. Please mark every photo on this topic that you post on social networks #ljforyou #greencapital2016 or #zpenarava.

From field to table

The global provision of food over long distances comes with ever rising uncertainty. Providing safe and quality food from the local environment is increasingly valued and gaining in importance. Imported food loses quality through being transported over long distances and for other reasons.

okusi ljubljane

Like other places in the world, Ljubljana has a few special dishes that were and are characteristic of individual periods of its historical development.

Tastes of Ljubljana

I pledge that I will cook one of the dishes from the Tastes of Ljubljana recipe book, which include mainly local ingredients.  Please mark every photo on this topic that you post on social networks #ljforyou #greencapital2016 or #okusiljubljane.

Bon appétit!

Ljubljana cuisine has always been characterized by its diversity of ingredients. Among the most characteristic are vegetables from suburban gardens. The Krakovo and Trnovo areas, less than half an hour’s walk from the city centre, still fill the stalls at the city’s open market even today. Of course meats are indispensible, especially beef and poultry from central Slovenian farms, plus meat from a variety of birds.

reciklaža

One of the things you can do yourself is to transform old clothes and furniture with a few good ideas or supplements. You can find great creative ideas everywhere, and we can look online for inspiration and a few tricks. Our blogger Tjaša Kokalj is going to write about this. Follow her!

Reuse of items and clothing

I pledge that I will adopt a philosophy of reuse and I will ensure that things I no longer need are given a new life. Please mark every photo on this topic that you post on social networks #ljforyou #greencapital2016 or #zpeodpadki.

Reuse centre

The reuse centre will take anything no longer needed and still in good condition, such as furniture, IT equipment, books, home and leisure items, sports equipment, clothes toys and games – in short, everything, in good condition and still useable. The centre prepares things for reuse and sells them for a token price in its green shop, where you can find attractive and unique products from a range of materials. Shopping at the reuse centre saves you money, protects the environment and supports local jobs.

vožnja s kolesom

The city centre, which was once choked by cars and buses, is now the domain of cyclists and pedestrians. City public transport is becoming ever more accessible and user-friendly to passengers.

AROUND THE CITY WITH BICIKE(LJ)

I pledge that this year I’ll ride my own bike or a bike from the BicikeLJ system on at least three separate occasions. Please mark every photo on this topic that you post on social networks #ljforyou #greencapital2016 or #EGCbike.

Carefree cycling

In May 2011, Ljubljana introduced the city bike loan system. Users have 360 bikes at 36 stations in and around the city centre. The system encourages users to borrow a bike for a journey and return it to one of the stations. The first hour is free, after which the rental price rises per hour.

Every individual can contribute greatly to protecting the natural environment in line with their ability. To this end we have prepared practical advice on saving energy on the Energetika Ljubljana website.

Saving energy

I pledge that I will use energy wisely. Please mark every photo on this topic that you post on social networks #ljforyou #greencapital2016 or #zpezrak.

The advantages of saving energy

Saving energy means reducing the energy used while at the same time saving money. Saving energy brings numerous advantages – you can save money and help the environment. Producing energy uses valuable natural resources, such as coal, oil and gas. So cutting energy use helps preserve these resources and makes them last longer.
