The ninth month of the green year in Ljubljana, the European Green Capital 2016, is thematically dedicated to sustainable mobility and air quality concerns.
September in Ljubljana has been traditionally marked by the European Mobility Week – the most widespread campaign to promote sustainable urban mobility, in which we have actively participated for fifteen consecutive years. Ljubljana is the only city that won the European Mobility Week award twice, for implementation and promotion of activities in this field. This year the campaign will be expanded and upgraded, because the activities will take place all month and will be supported by numerous permanent environment-friendly measures. Among them are the opening of the newly renovated public spaces, transport improvements, mainly intended for pedestrians and cyclists, the expansion of “Bicikelj” system and opening of the Kolopark, new bicycle racks at terminal stations LPP, Cycling Yearbook 2014-2015 and new charging stations for electric vehicles.
With the activities, we appeal to the citizens to reflect on the individual environment-friendly engagement for the common green future. This means that each person should think about how to travel more consciously, healthily and with fewer negative impacts on the environment. This is the key theme of this year's European Mobility Week (EMW), which runs under the slogan "Smart Mobility for Economic Success."
September je namenjen trajnostni mobilnosti in kakovosti zraka."
Point. For You.
The September programme at the Point. For You. and many other locations in Ljubljana is very diversified and educational.
Ljubljana Passenger Transport (i.e. LPP) invites you to take a ride on the Urban electric train, which will run free of charge to Ljubljana Castle for a whole month, to hop on a bus and do a guided sightseeing tour around the town with Tourism Ljubljana, and get to know new services LPP: the on call transfer by the new electrical EURBAN vehicles. On 22 September, World Car Free Day, all city buses will run free of charge.
You can also take tours with Mountaineering or Cycling Association of LPP, which will take place every Saturday and Sunday, run through the city or cycle themed paths – Plečnik, Waterside, Forest and PTS path - with Ljubljana Tourism. In front of the Town Hall, you can learn how to repair your bike or just leave the job to the professionals - free of charge. At the Point. For You. there will be numerous themed workshops for children, who will be able to share toys and be creative, theatre performances, exhibitions, games, lectures, panel discussions, musical and dance performances and various presentations. There will also be a lot of fun in kindergartens and schools, and thousands of children will participate at the beginning of EMW and once again dance in Congress Square at the event named “I Breathe Dance”.
Various cycling tours and learning activities about the city are planned, through thematic photo-orientation; there will be a display of environmental friendly vehicles and interesting means of transport, and you can also test yourself on Ovirantlon, a track with obstacles. We will focus on sports activities, active lifestyle and healthy mobility, pay attention to science for the young and young at heart. We will also talk about topics such as road safety, traffic culture and efficient driving, and focus on understanding the nature and taste its gifts.
The events will be aimed at all generations, but at the end of September, when Ljubljana is hosting The Festival of the Third Age, we are preparing special workshops and tests for senior citizens, who will be able to learn about the Information point for the elderly and for persons with disabilities 65+ at 1 Mačkova Street.
Those who master the smart phones, applications and other advanced information technology systems will profit as well, with an emphasis on issues concerning sustainable route planning and air quality. You will be able to learn about two European projects, ClairCity and SocialCar, which contribute to a better quality of life and Ljubljana participates in them. In cooperation with Heineken we are preparing a promotional campaign that highlights cycling as a daily form of mobility for discovering the city, going to work or school and running errands. Although cycling itself is already rewarding because of its many advantages, a campaign incentive will be even greater: you yourself can contribute to the new cycling infrastructure in Ljubljana by turning the pedals. During the summer months Point. For You. is open daily from 10 am to 20 pm. You are invited to follow the programme and detailed information about individual events on the interactive website www.greenljubljana.com or information point Point. For You. in front of the City Hall.
Local districts – the ambassadors of the European Green Capital 2016
Ljubljana district communities are actively involved in the Green Capital programme, since each of them will have become a green ambassador for three weeks by the end of the year. The current ambassador is the Bežigrad district, and will pass the title to Trnovo district on 18 September. On Thursday, 22 September, World Car Free Day, all Ljubljana Local districts will be involved in the green programme. The goal of that day will be trying to answer the question what other purpose, instead of cars, can valuable public space serve for. In all 17 city quarters the motor traffic will therefore be restricted at one of the local roads and that area will be used for performing a varied programme.
