Producing biofuels from waste materials and their use

At the 50th meeting of young researchers which took place in Murska Sobota in May, pupil Matej Filipič from the ninth grade at Valentin Vodnik primary school won a gold award for a research paper entitled "Producing biofuels from waste materials and their use". The research paper presents the manufacture of a kiln to convert waste wood into gas, charcoal and a fluid (a mix of water, acetone and methanol) as well as equipment trials, in which flammable gas was produced. Repeated tests were necessary to improve the kiln technically. A generator was also presented, which runs on the flammable gas mentioned. The kiln can also be used for the conversion of waste plastic and rubber. The kiln is sustainable or sustainably oriented, as wood is a renewable fuel, and rubber and plastics are harmful to the environment. The research will be presented at the ‘Info point For. You.’ in front of City Hall from 11am to 1pm on Monday 6 June.
