Portugal for me
Active, wild, tasty and sunny.
I love exploring our magical planet and always do so very freely and actively. The only outlined goal of every trip is to be very active in sports. My hometown Ljubljana has certainly spoilt me throughout my life in terms of the limitless options to get exercise in the natural world and so it is that none of my trips go without smooth activities. This year’s ‘road trip’ to Portugal was no exception.
For many residents of central Europe, Portugal is almost as remote as the lands across the Atlantic. But this country in the far west of the continent is not really that far away. Apart from the main tourist spots, the country is relatively little visited, which means that tourists have on hand limitless possibilities to discover the beauties of this country and its people. Portugal is proud of its Atlantic coast, which covers a major part of the country, and I have been there several times, mostly to Lisbon, the magical capital, while in May this year I travelled a long way along the Atlantic looking for the best locations to go surfing.
Our Ljubljana offers us many natural areas for exercise, so that even today on your daily run or walk you can get away from it all under the green canopy of the trees on Rožnik, Šmarna gora or Rašica, which are my favourite sporting destinations. In my local area, I most enjoy running and walking and sometimes I do one of my smooth exercises on the nice grass in Tivoli Park. Really, there’s no shortage of places for the sports-hungry residents of Ljubljana in the city and its immediate environs.

Well, all the same I have to find somewhere to go surfing beyond our green capital and when I went to look for this along Portugal’s wild coast I travelled in a camper van and, as well as a surfboard, took a bike and running shoes. Every kilometre I drove I was left surprised by how unspoilt Portugal’s wild Atlantic coast remains. I was beckoned into the sea by the wild Atlantic waves, to smooth cycling by the steep sea cliffs and to go for a run along rugged paths. Golden yellow sandy beaches and enchanting sunsets created a sense of tranquillity.
Most of the time, I had the epic-scale beaches all to myself and a hot country and cold sea made jumping into the surf and riding the waves even more exciting. I soothed my tired body with nearly an hour of my smoothlates on the golden yellow sand accompanied by the melody of the waves. In these uninhabited lonely wild places, which in Portugal, like in our Ljubljana, are not hard to find, every smooth activity takes on a completely new dimension.
Portuguese cuisine has a special place in the midst of all this. It’s an ancient wisdom that love goes via the stomach and there’s nothing different about falling in love in a foreign country. Wherever I am, I like trying out and eating local and ecologically produced food, as only this is the tastiest and highest quality. In Ljubljana I find this most often in our sumptuous Ljubljana market where every Friday we have the Open Kitchen and a truly unique chance to taste various foreign dishes.
At first sight, Portuguese cuisine looks simple but is surprisingly tasty. Poor soil and restricted culinary resources encourage people to make the most of what they’ve got. The result is outstandingly tasty and sometimes exceptionally innovative dishes and the Portuguese take plenty of time to enjoy these. By myself, I mostly did this along with nibbling the tasty olives without which no dinner table would be complete and sipping the dessert, sweet and heavy Portuguese port. This is a wine of which you drink just one glass and is considered to be best restricted to “cuddling” while gazing at dreamy sunsets.
Portugal is in itself something special and experiencing it in this way is simply unique. It pays off in this country to deliberately let yourself get lost, to begin to dream a little and constantly flirt with the sun which all day slowly sinks into the endless Atlantic and gaze at the beautiful landscape and unspoilt countryside. It’s great that our Ljubljana is as magical, so that from such wonderful trips it is still best to go back home where I most enjoy drinking my favourite smoothie!
I’ll write about a smooth recipe for the best and most effective smoothies and smooth living in the next blog :)
