The Global Green Destinations Day conference, taking place in Ljubljana, brought Ljubljana two important global awards. Ljubljana was ranked among the Global Top 100 Sustainable Destinations for the second time while Taste Ljubljana project by Ljubljana Tourism was included in the selection of Top 10 Green Solutions.
The first time our city was included in the Global Top 100 Sustainable Destinations list was in 2014. Beside Ljubljana, all of Slovenian destinations holding the national Slovenia Green Destination quality mark were also ranked on the list, making Slovenia the country with most sustainable destinations in the world. The selection of world's most sustainable destinations is carried out by a jury of internationally recognized experts in the field of sustainable development. The list is a joint initiative of international organizations Green Destinations, Travelmole's VISION on Sustainable Tourism and the Destination Stewardship Center.
Taste Ljubljana project among the 10 best green solutions
Projects that are ranked among the 10 best green solutions were evaluated by a special international Jury appointed by the Organizing partners of Global Green Destinations Day. The Jury used the following criteria to select green practices:
Typical dishes Ljubljana within the framework of the Taste Ljubljana project are available in a number of restaurants across the city. The project strives to popularize traditional local dishes, made from ingredients grown in urban gardens and farms in the vicinity of Ljubljana. Taste Ljubljana is characterized by a sustainable approach to local production as well as an innovative combination of traditional recipes and modern methods of preparation. Apart from Taste Ljubljana project two other Slovenian (Snovik SPA and Trnulja Country Estate) and seven foreign solutions were included to the top 10 list.
Slovenia Green Destination quality brand
Ljubljana, which also proudly bears the title of European Green Capital 2016, was the first holder of the Slovenia Green Destination quality mark last year, when the national certification scheme for it was established. Internationally acclaimed as the Global Top 100 Sustainable Destinations 2016 are also all of last year's Slovenia Green Destination quality mark holders Kamnik, Idrija, Rogla-Zreče, Radlje ob Dravi, Cerkno, Laško, Žalec, Celje, and this year's new holders Nova Gorica, Brda, Kranjska Gora Maribor, Ptuj, Slovenj Gradec, Velenje and Bela krajina.
The quality brands Slovenia Green Destination and Slovenia Green Accomodation, developed by the Slovenian Tourist Board, are based on the global Green Destinations standard in combination with the ETIS system by European Commission. The evaluations are based on hundred different criteria.
